M. asked me for a link to the article in Tuesday’s paper about yoga and food, alas there was no link on the papers website, so last night I dived into my recycling bin and retrieved the article, which I have copied out below.
FITNESS NEWS Yoga cuts appetite
People who practice yoga for at least one hour per week have a smaller appetite and often less than others.
Scientists at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research centre in Seattle analysing the eating patterns of 300 gym members found that yoga devotees had more controlled eating habits than those who did other types of exercise, and were more likely to stop eating when they felt full. It’s thought that because yoga reduces stress, this in turn prevents stress hormones such as Cortisol – known to trigger binge eating behaviour – from being released. Stressed people tend to seek comfort in carbohydrates as these release feel-good hormones such as Serotonin.
Portside kindly sent me a link to the full artcile about the study, its here. http://www.fhcrc.org/about/ne/news/2009/08/03/yoga.html

Hiya, interesting article. I think yoga makes you more aware of your body too so you don’t want to fill it with garbage. That said a lot but by no means all people who start yoga are thin when they start, so may already have good eating habbits.
Re:Sunday, if trains are problematic could you go Saturday instead, Ryan was good (TY). A new teacher once in awhile is good I think, I always learn something new. Also Danny Paradise is doing a workshop if you fancy that.

Hi Helen, Yoga has improved my eating habits no end (The Nutritionist has also helped). I came to yoga after injury from playing tennis, I was typical of what the article talks about, in that I did another form of exercise and ate whatever, without recourse to its effects. I am not much lighter than I was when I played tennis every day, but my body shape seems to have changed and I just “know” what my body wants and what “feels” right, yoga has trained the mind as well as the body.
I can’t get up there early enough on Saturday for Ryan, I have a couple of appointments. TY have this habit of cancelling classes as well. I’ll check out the workshops

I totally agree with what you said about yoga and eating habbits and just “knowing” what you need.
Danny Paradise is at tri yoga, maybe see you there.

I came up with the link to the study referenced in the DailyMail article (with a internal link to the earlier study).
